Introduction
Ninth chord is like seventh chord but in ninth chord,9th note from chord scale is added.however, it still has 7th with additional 9th .So the chord parable as below,
Triad (major/minor) + 7th + 9th = Maj/m9
There are three type of basic ninth chord. They are Dominant9,major9,& minor9.It easy to build 9 chord.Start from major or minor triad, add seventh, then add ninth into the chord.ninth notes is an octave higher than the tonic scale. It is an octave of 2nd note in scale.Example in A minor & C major scale below.
Interval | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
Am | A | B | C | D | E | F | G | A | B |
A | A | B | C# | D | E | F# | G# | A | B |
How to Build 9th chord
To build ninth chord, refer to formula below, use Am scale as example,
Dominant 9th : 1 - 3 - 5 - b7 - 9
Major 7th minor 9th (Major 9) : 1 - 3 - 5 - 7 - 9
Minor 7th minor 9th (Minor 9) : 1 - b3 - 5 - b7 – 9
To build A9 chord, use first formula above.add 7th note (from Am scale) & 9th (from A major scale)to the triad major chord.A-C#-E.7th note in A minor scale is G,while 9th in A minor scale is B.So, the new A9 chord become A-C#-E-G-B
To build Amaj9 chord, use second formula above.same step in A9 building chord, but 7th in Amaj9 is sharpen.7th note come from major scale instead of A9 that use 7th (from minor scale).Dominant 7 chord is combination of major triad with minor 7th discuss on last session of Dominant 7 chord . 7th note in Am scale is G# note,9th note in Am scale is B note. So,new Amaj9 chord interval is : A-C#-E-G#-B.
To build Am9 chord, use third formula. Also add 7th from Am scale and 9th from Am scale to the triad.same step as previous 9 and maj9 chord.New Am9 chord interval is : A-C-E-G-B.
Table below show some ninth chord was builed.
